Small Stoned Oil Leather Satchel by CraftedSteampunk Small Stoned Oil Leather Satchel by CraftedSteampunk
This is a 9 inch wide by 11 inches tall and 3.5 inch deep stoned oil leather satchel. I've been experimenting with this kind of leather and bags lately. This particular size has a pocket for an iPad or other tablet, and a larger pocket for other items. The strap is resizable, removable, and made of the same kind of leather. It's all saddle stitched, and the stitch ends are reinforced with rivets for added strength.

This item is now something available in my Etsy store as well: www.etsy.com/listing/152931999…

Hi i've recently gotten into leather working and while i've only been making small things like dice pouches and book covers I'd love to make a project like this. Did you use a template for this or make the design yourself. any good tips for someone who wants to get into bag making?

This was one of the first bags I made. It's really not a hard build at all. There's so much that goes into it though I don't know where to start.

I suppose the first thing is to choose the right kind of leather for the kind of bag you want. Too thin and flexible, and it'll stretch and tear when it's overloaded. Too thick and stiff, and it won't hold your stuff properly.

I did not use a template. I just sort of made it up as I went along. It's really just 4 pieces. The front, bottom, back, and flap is one long piece. Then two sides, and a square for the inside pocket.

I believe this one was also 4-5 Stoned Oil Leather. It's from Tandy Leather Factory. I like this particular leather a lot, however it tends to be on the oily side and needs to be treated.
